Why Play Letter Soup?

  • 1

    Builds Vocabulary Through Active Search

Scanning a set of letters for valid words requires actively retrieving vocabulary from memory — a much more effective learning strategy than passive reading.

  • 2

Rewards Word Length — No Filler Words

The progressive scoring system (3 letters = 1 pt, 6+ letters = 8 pts) encourages finding longer, more sophisticated words rather than relying on short common ones.

  • 3

    Flexible Pace for Any Player

Timed mode builds speed and word-finding fluency under pressure; Relaxed mode lets players take their time and explore all possibilities — both have their place in vocabulary development.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Letter Soup?

Letter Soup is a word game where you're given a set of random letters and must find as many valid English words as possible using only those letters.

How is scoring calculated?

Points increase with word length: 3-letter words earn 1 point, 4-letter words earn 2 points, 5-letter words earn 4 points, and words with 6+ letters earn 8 points.

Can I use a letter more than once?

You can only use each letter as many times as it appears in the set. For example, if there's one 'S', you can only use 'S' once per word.

What's the difference between Timed and Relaxed mode?

In Timed mode, you race against the clock (3 min / 2 min / 90 sec depending on difficulty). In Relaxed mode, there's no time limit — end the game whenever you're ready.
