How to Play Closest Number Wins

  1. 1

    Choose Mode and Difficulty

Pick Solo or 2-Player, then choose Easy (simple multiplication and %), Medium (2-digit multiply, square roots), or Hard (3-digit math, decimal %, chains).

  2. 2

    See the Expression

A math expression appears — like '37 × 14' or '√625' or '15% of 280'. Don't calculate exactly; estimate the answer in your head.

  3. 3

    Enter Your Best Estimate

Type your guess or use the adjustment buttons. In 2-player, tap Submit and pass the device to player 2 without revealing the guess.

  4. 4

    Score Based on Closeness

The correct answer is revealed. Your score is proportional to accuracy. In 2-player, the closer estimate wins the round. After 10 rounds, see who scores more!

Key Features

  • Solo and 2-Player Modes

Play solo against your own high score, or pass the device between two players for a face-to-face estimation duel. A privacy screen hides the first player's guess from the second.

  • Diverse Expression Types

Expressions span multiplication, division, percentages, square roots, squaring, and arithmetic chains — covering the full range of mental math estimation skills.

  • Accuracy-Based Scoring

Score = 100 minus your percentage error. Rated Amazing (≤5% off), Great (≤15%), Close (≤30%), or Miss (>30%). The closest player in 2-player mode takes the round.

  • Smart Adjustment Controls

Fine-tune your estimate using ±1, ±10, and ±100 buttons without retyping your whole answer — great for locking in a close estimate quickly.

What is Closest Number Wins?

Closest Number Wins is a math estimation challenge inspired by game shows where the contestant closest to the right answer without going over wins. Here, both players guess the result of a math expression — no exact calculation needed, just your best mental estimate. It's an excellent way to build number sense, estimation strategies, and comfort with mental approximation. The 2-player mode makes it a fantastic social and party math game.

Why Play Closest Number Wins?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to get the exact answer to score points?

No! You score based on how close your estimate is as a percentage. Being within 5% earns an 'Amazing' rating and near-full points. The key is getting in the right ballpark, not calculating precisely.

How does 2-player mode work?

Both players see the same expression. Player 1 enters their guess and taps Submit — the guess is hidden. A privacy screen appears so Player 2 can't see P1's answer. After P2 submits, both answers and the correct answer are revealed. Closest guess wins the round.

What types of expressions appear?

Easy: simple multiplication (e.g. 7 × 8) and round percentages (20% of 50). Medium: 2-digit multiplication, square roots, squaring. Hard: 3-digit multiplication, decimal percentages (12.5% of 240), large square roots, and arithmetic chains (a + b × c).

Is there a time limit per question?

No time limit — take as long as you need to form your estimate. The game rewards accuracy over speed, so thoughtful approximation is encouraged.

How is the best score saved in solo mode?

Your best 10-round solo score is saved in your browser's local storage, separately for each difficulty level. It persists between sessions until you clear your browser data.
