A night canal, amber paper lanterns, and a glowing firefly on the dock. A voice reads a sight word. Tap the lantern that matches. The firefly hops to that light. A clean hop scores. A miss slips into the water. Built for kindergarten and first-grade high-frequency words.

Key Features

  • Hear, Then Hop

The narrator speaks one English sight word. Lanterns hold look-alike choices. Tap the match and the firefly leaps to that lantern.

  • Instant Canal Feedback

A right lantern glows mint and the hop lands. A miss flashes rose, the firefly slips, and the spoken word is shown.

  • Three Word Banks

Easy uses short words on three lanterns. Medium adds kindergarten words on four. Hard uses longer first-grade words on five.

  • Hear It Again

A big speaker button repeats the word. Space also replays it. Keys 1 to 5 pick lanterns from the left.

What is Lantern Leap?

Lantern Leap is a listen-and-match sight word game. A night canal holds paper lanterns labeled with high-frequency English words. The player hears one word, taps the matching lantern, and a firefly hops to that light. The practice words stay in English. Buttons and labels follow the site locale.

Why Play Lantern Leap?

  • 1

    Ears Before Print

Students map a spoken word to print. That is the core of early sight-word reading.

  • 2

    Look-Alike Choices

Decoys lean on near words such as there and their, so the hop is not a lucky tap.

  • 3

    Touch First

Each lantern is a large tap target. Play sits under the board, not on top of the lights.

  • 4

    Replay the Voice

Kindergarten players can hear the word as many times as they need before they hop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I see the target word on the screen?

The prompt is the voice. If your browser cannot speak, the word appears as text so the round is still playable.

Are the sight words translated?

No. The practice words stay in English. Buttons, hints, and results follow the page language.

What do Easy, Medium, and Hard change?

The word list and how many lanterns float on the canal. Easy uses short words on three lanterns. Hard uses longer first-grade words on five.

Can I hear the word more than once?

Yes. Tap the speaker or press Space. The same English word plays again.

What grade is this for?

Pre-K through first grade, when students are learning high-frequency words by sight and by ear.
