  5. Equal Buckets and Remainders

Equal Buckets and Remainders

Shell Share

Each beach starts with a pile of shells and one number that every bucket must hold. Tap a shell to move one into the open bucket, or press Pack to fill that bucket in one scoop. Press Keep leftovers when the shells that remain cannot make another full bucket. The line under the buttons then shows the division and the multiplication check.

How to Play Shell Share

  1. 1

    Read the beach task

Beach 1 / 8 says Pack 23 shells into buckets of 4. Shells left starts at 23, Full buckets at 0, and the open bucket shows 0 / 4. Score, Streak, and Best sit in the header.

  2. 2

    Tap a shell or Pack

Tap a shell to put it in the bucket, or press Pack 4 to scoop a whole group. Enter also packs, and U is Undo. The equation shows full buckets times the bucket size, plus the open bucket, plus Shells left.

  3. 3

    Press Keep leftovers

Press Keep leftovers, or K, when the shells that remain cannot fill another bucket. The label changes from Shells left to Remainder. A correct beach says All packed! The remainder is smaller than the divisor.

  4. 4

    Press Next beach

Press Next beach, or Enter, to go on. After Beach 8 / 8 the card says Beach collection complete! and Eight beaches explored, with the Score. The button is Play again.

Key Features

  • Eight beaches in a fixed order

    The label runs from Beach 1 / 8 to Beach 8 / 8, and a dot fills when that beach is kept. The piles stay in this order: 23 shells in buckets of 4, then 17 of 3, 29 of 5, 32 of 6, 38 of 7, 43 of 8, 47 of 9, and 36 of 6.

  • Tap a shell or press Pack

Tap a shell to move one into the open bucket, or press Pack, which scoops the rest of that bucket and reads Pack 4, Pack 3, and so on. Pack cannot be pressed when Shells left cannot finish the bucket, and Undo puts the last move back.

  • Keep leftovers at the right time

Keep leftovers works only when the open bucket reads 0 over its size and Shells left is smaller than that size. A partial bucket says Finish filling this bucket before keeping leftovers, and an early keep says You can still fill a bucket. Pack another equal group! while setting Streak to 0.

  • Score, Streak, and Best

A clean Keep leftovers adds 40 points plus 5 for the new Streak, so the first beach with Streak 1 is 45, and that extra part stops at 25. After an early keep the base is 20, Best stores the highest Score on this device, and Play again clears Score and Streak but leaves Best.

What is Shell Share?

Shell Share is a beach board where every bucket on a beach holds the same number of shells. You fill one open bucket, send each full bucket to Full buckets, and press Keep leftovers only for shells that cannot fill another. The header keeps Score, Streak, and Best from Beach 1 / 8 through Beach 8 / 8. On Beach 1 / 8 the task is Pack 23 shells into buckets of 4. Five full buckets hold 20 shells, and the Remainder is 3. The line reads 23 ÷ 4 = 5 R 3 · 5 × 4 + 3 = 23, and the note shows 3 < 4. A first clean Keep leftovers adds 45 to Score.

Why Play Shell Share?

  • 1

The remainder is smaller than the divisor

A correct keep prints All packed! The remainder is smaller than the divisor, then a comparison such as 3 < 4. The same test covers a remainder of 0, which is still smaller than the bucket size.

  • 2

An early keep changes the points

Keep leftovers while another full bucket still fits sets Streak to 0 and marks that beach missed. You stay on the beach, and the later correct keep uses a base of 20, then adds the new streak bonus.

  • 3

    Multiply, then add the remainder

During packing, the equation is full buckets times the bucket size, plus the open bucket, plus Shells left. After a keep it shows the division with R, then the check from Multiply, then add the remainder. Beach 3 / 8 is 29 ÷ 5 = 5 R 4 · 5 × 5 + 4 = 29.

  • 4

Beach 8 can use every shell

    The last task is Pack 36 shells into buckets of 6, which makes 6 full buckets and Remainder 0. The pile says No shells left over, and the check is 36 ÷ 6 = 6 R 0 · 6 × 6 + 0 = 36.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grade is Shell Share for?

Fourth grade. Each beach packs equal groups, names the Remainder, and checks by multiplying Full buckets by the shells per bucket, then adding what is left.

How is the Score calculated?

Points are added once, when Keep leftovers is accepted. With no miss, that is 40 plus 5 times the Streak, and the added bonus never goes past 25. If Keep leftovers was already pressed while another bucket could be filled, that beach uses 20 as the base. Best keeps the highest Score on this device. Play again sets Score and Streak to 0 and leaves Best as it is.

What happens if Keep leftovers is pressed too early?

Two notes can appear. Finish filling this bucket before keeping leftovers shows when the open bucket is partial, and Score and Streak stay the same. You can still fill a bucket. Pack another equal group! shows when a whole bucket still fits, and that note sets Streak to 0. If the leftover shells cannot finish a partial bucket, press Undo until the bucket reads 0, then press Keep leftovers.

How many beaches are there, and is there a timer?

There are eight beaches, labeled Beach 1 / 8 through Beach 8 / 8, always in the same order. The board has no clock. A miss keeps you on the same beach until Keep leftovers is accepted, and Next beach after the eighth keep opens Beach collection complete!

Do players type the quotient and remainder?

No. They tap shells and use Pack, Undo, Keep leftovers, and Next beach. Enter packs, and after a keep it acts as Next beach. K is Keep leftovers, and U is Undo. The header button says Mute when sound is on, and Sound on when sound is off.
