Scale Climb

A granite ridge names a mode on the cairn: Major, Natural minor, Dorian, or Mixolydian. Stones are pitches. Climb by tapping the next scale degree, 1 through 8. A wrong step is a Drop down a ledge. Finish the ridge four times. High-school pitch work on a mountain, not answer buttons.

How to Play Scale Climb

  1. 1

    Read the cairn

Pick Easy, Medium, or Hard, then Climb. The cairn names Major, Natural minor, Dorian, or Mixolydian and shows the next degree from 1 to 8.

  2. 2

    Climb the next stone

Tap the pitch that is the next scale degree. Degree numbers stay 1–8. The stone plays when you tap it.

  3. 3

    Hold or Drop

A right tap is Held! and adds Score, Streak, and Pitches. A wrong tap is a Drop and costs a rope life. The climber slips one ledge.

  4. 4

    Finish four ridges

Climb 8 Pitches four times for Summit, or keep going until the ropes go dark. Ridge closed shows Score, Streak, and Climb again.

Key Features

  • Climb the stones

The cairn shows Major, Natural minor, Dorian, or Mixolydian. Stones sit on the ridge at different pitches. Tap the next degree to Climb.

  • A mountain, not buttons

The path is granite and ice. A right stone Holds the climber and pulls the rope. A wrong stone is a Drop down a ledge.

  • Score, Streak, Pitches

Eight Pitches finish one ridge. Four ridges reach Summit. Each Hold grows Score and Streak. Three rope lives.

  • Modes open with Hard

Easy is Major only. Medium is Major vs Natural minor. Hard adds Dorian and Mixolydian.

What is Scale Climb?

Scale Climb is a high-school pitch game on a granite ridge. A cairn names Major, Natural minor, Dorian, or Mixolydian. The player Climbs by tapping stones in scale order from 1 to 8. Easy stays on Major. Medium adds Natural minor. Hard adds Dorian and Mixolydian. Four ridges finish the run. The path is a mountain, not a row of answer buttons.

Why Play Scale Climb?

  • 1

    Modes as a path

Students walk Major, Natural minor, Dorian, and Mixolydian one degree at a time. 1–8 stay on the cairn.

  • 2

    Skill changes with the ridge

Easy is Major only. Medium asks Major vs Natural minor. Hard adds Dorian and Mixolydian. The stones change, not only the copy.

  • 3

    Held or Drop

A hit Holds and grows Score, Streak, and Pitches. A miss Drops the climber. The board and the how-to share Climb, Major, Natural minor, Dorian, and Mixolydian.

  • 4

    Finger-sized stones

Tap a stone. It plays. The climber and the rope show how far you have Climbed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I tap?

Tap the next scale degree on the ridge. The cairn shows the mode — Major, Natural minor, Dorian, or Mixolydian — and the next number from 1 to 8.

What is a Drop?

A wrong stone drops the climber one ledge and costs a rope life. Streak resets. You Climb again from the stone below.

What do Easy, Medium, and Hard change?

How do I score?

What grade is Scale Climb for?

High-school music. Students who already know Major, Natural minor, Dorian, and Mixolydian and can Climb degrees 1–8.
