Perimeter and Area by Counting Squares

Chalk Lot

Draw on a driveway in Chalk Lot. Trace the fence to count the walk around a rectangle, or fill the squares to count how many unit squares fit inside. Third grade geometry: perimeter and area by counting, not by a hidden formula.

How to Play Chalk Lot

  1. 1

    See the lot

Chalk Lot starts on its own. A chalk rectangle sits on the driveway. Easy, Medium, or Hard stay on the curb so you can switch without a menu.

  2. 2

Trace the fence or Fill the squares

The prompt says Trace the fence or Fill the squares. Fence is the walk around the outside. Squares is how many fit inside.

  3. 3

    Sweep the tool

Hold the chalk. Drag around the outside. Hold the stone. Drag across the squares. Chalk marks the fence. Stone fills the squares. The count grows as you go. Finish the lot to score Lots.

  4. 4

    Six Lots

Finish six lots to win, or play until the chalk stubs are gone. Chalk rain shows your Lots score, a rank, and Draw again.

Key Features

  • Trace the fence

Hold the chalk. Drag around the outside. Each unit of fence lights up as you pass. Fence is the walk around the outside. A running count shows how far you have gone.

  • Fill the squares

Hold the stone. Drag across the squares. Each unit square fills in. Squares is how many fit inside. Kids count the grid they can see.

  • Lots score

A finished lot adds to Lots and grows a streak. A miss snaps a chalk stub, shakes the lot, and resets the streak.

  • Difficulty that changes the lot

Easy uses 2×2 and 2×3 lots and only the right tool. Medium grows the grid and puts both tools on the curb. Hard uses bigger lots up to 4×5.

What is Chalk Lot?

Chalk Lot is a third grade geometry game about perimeter and area of rectangles. Kids trace the fence by walking unit lengths around the outside, or fill the squares by covering every unit square inside. The driveway grid makes both ideas countable. The skill is Fence and Squares, not matching a formula on a slat.

Why Play Chalk Lot?

  • 1

    Teaches Fence and Squares

Fence is perimeter: walk around the outside. Squares is area: count the inside. The lot makes both rules something a third grader can see.

  • 2

Unit squares, not a formula first

The grid stays visible. Kids count. After a lot is done they hear Fence is n or Squares is n.

  • 3

    Instant chalk feedback

Correct sweeps mark the lot and raise Lots. Misses snap a stub. Kids see the count grow without a Done step.

  • 4

Works on a finger or a mouse

Sweep chalk or the stone across the lot. Empty fence ticks and empty squares are dashed. The hot unit lights up while you drag.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Fence and Squares?

Fence is the perimeter: the walk around the outside. Squares is the area: how many unit squares fit inside. Chalk Lot asks for one job at a time.

How do I trace the fence?

Hold the chalk. Drag around the outside on the dashed line. Each unit you pass marks. Keep going until the count matches the full walk around.

How do I fill the squares?

Hold the stone. Drag across the squares inside the lot. Fill every square to finish.

How do Lots points work?

Each finished lot starts at 100 Lots and grows by 50 with a streak. A miss resets the streak and snaps one of three chalk stubs.

What grade is Chalk Lot for?

Chalk Lot is third grade geometry. Easy starts with 2×2 and 2×3 lots. Medium and Hard grow the grid and add a second tool.
