Figurative Language in Sentences

Lure Den

A limestone den at dusk. Wooden bait hangs from the camp rail, each lure stamped with a word. Read the English line, then dangle the fitting word at the cave so the dino peeks and the copper camera can Snap. Eight Shots win. Fifth-grade figurative language: metaphor, simile, and idiom in a sentence.

How to Play Lure Den

  1. 1

    Read the Line

The film card shows an English sentence with a blank. Think which word completes the figure: pigpen, not factory.

  2. 2

    Dangle Bait at the Cave

Drag the fitting word up to the Cave. The mouth glows when the lure is over it. Drop to dangle bait here.

  3. 3

    Snap or Dino Hid

The right lure makes Snap and a polaroid. A wrong lure and the dino hid. You lose a flash bulb and the Streak resets.

  4. 4

    Fill Eight Shots

Capture eight Shots to develop the roll. Switch Easy, Medium, or Hard on the lens chips whenever you like.

Key Features

  • A Den, Not a Quiz Strip

Lures bob on a camp rail. You drag the right bait up into the cave mouth. A hit makes the dino Snap into the flash. A miss makes it hide and the lure recoils.

  • Word That Fits the Figure

A messy bedroom is most like a pigpen, not a factory. The sentence stays English. You pick the word that completes the metaphor, simile, or idiom.

  • More Lures, Harder Foils

Easy hangs two lures with clear figures. Medium adds a near-miss word. Hard hangs four lures and tricky tropes like cake next to pie.

  • Eight Shots

Each Snap scores 100 plus a Streak bonus. Three dark flash bulbs end the run. A perfect roll adds a bonus when the film develops.

What is Lure Den?

Lure Den is a fifth-grade figurative language game. Players dangle wooden bait stamped with English words at a cave so a dino will peek for a photo. The skill is choosing the word that completes a metaphor, simile, or idiom in a sentence.

Why Play Lure Den?

  • 1

    You Dangle the Bait

There is no row of answer buttons. The lure has weight. Dropping it in the Cave changes the den: peek, Snap, or hide.

  • 2

    Near Misses Stay Honest

Hard hangs cake next to pie, boat next to ship. The idiom has to be the one kids meet in books.

  • 3

    A Steady Stage

The film HUD, cave, sentence card, and lure rail keep the same height. Feedback is flash, recoil, and overlays, not a layout jump.

  • 4

    Touch First

Each lure is a big drag target. The Cave highlights when bait is over it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lure do I dangle?

Dangle the word that completes the figure in the sentence. A messy bedroom is a pigpen, not a factory. She spilled the beans, not the milk.

What happens when I drop the right bait?

The dino peeks, the camera does Snap, you score, and a polaroid hangs on the line. After eight Shots the roll is developed.

What do Easy, Medium, and Hard change?

How many lures hang and how close the wrong words are. Easy is two clear figures. Hard hangs four lures and tricky tropes.

Do I tap the lures?

No. Drag a lure up onto the Cave. If you drop it on the sand it snaps back and you do not lose a life.

What grade is this for?

Fifth grade (about ages 10–11), when students meet metaphor, simile, and idiom in sentences.
