What Is This?

Word Search is a classic puzzle where words are hidden in a grid of letters, running horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Players scan the grid and highlight each word by dragging from its first to last letter. Our online Word Search generator creates a fresh, randomized puzzle every game from a curated vocabulary bank, spanning six fun categories and three grid sizes.

Why Use This?

Word Search is a proven brain exercise for people of all ages. It sharpens visual scanning, pattern recognition, and vocabulary skills in a low-pressure, satisfying format. The drag-to-highlight mechanic is instantly intuitive on both desktop and mobile, and the multiple categories mean players can focus on vocabulary topics they enjoy — from space exploration to international cuisine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can words appear backwards?

Yes! On medium and hard difficulties, words can be placed in all 8 directions, including right-to-left and bottom-to-top. On easy difficulty, words only appear horizontally and vertically (left-to-right and top-to-bottom).

How does the drag selection work on mobile?

Touch and hold the first letter, then slide your finger to the last letter without lifting it. Release to confirm the selection. The grid blocks page scrolling while you are selecting.

Is there a time limit?

No. The timer counts up so you can see how fast you solved the puzzle, but there is no time limit. Take as long as you need!

Are the puzzles the same every time?

No — every game generates a fresh randomized grid. Words are placed in random positions and directions each time you start a new game.

What are the word list sizes?

Easy mode places 6 words in an 8×8 grid, Medium places 8 words in a 10×10 grid, and Hard places 10 words in a 12×12 grid. Each category contains 12 themed vocabulary words to draw from.
