What is a Leap Year?

A leap year is a calendar year containing one additional day (February 29th) to keep the calendar synchronized with Earth's orbit around the Sun. Since Earth takes approximately 365.25 days to orbit the Sun, we add an extra day every four years to prevent seasonal drift. However, the rules are more complex: a year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except for years divisible by 100 (unless they're also divisible by 400). This means 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a year a leap year?

A year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4. However, years divisible by 100 are NOT leap years unless they're also divisible by 400. For example: 2024 is a leap year (divisible by 4), 1900 was not (divisible by 100 but not 400), and 2000 was a leap year (divisible by 400).

Why do we have leap years?

Earth takes approximately 365.25 days to orbit the Sun, not exactly 365 days. Without leap years, our calendar would drift out of sync with the seasons by about 24 days every century. The extra day every four years keeps our calendar aligned with Earth's orbit.

Is 2024 a leap year?

Yes! 2024 is a leap year because it's divisible by 4 and not a century year. It has 366 days with February 29th as the extra day.

Why wasn't 1900 a leap year?

Although 1900 is divisible by 4, it's also divisible by 100, which makes it a century year. Century years are only leap years if they're divisible by 400. Since 1900 is not divisible by 400, it was not a leap year.

When is the next leap year?

The next leap year depends on the current year. Our tool automatically calculates this for you! Leap years occur every 4 years, so after 2024, the next leap year will be 2028.

Can I check historical leap years?

Yes! Our checker works for any year from 1 to 9999, so you can verify leap years throughout history and far into the future.
